Histoplasma capsulatum is commonly found in soil enriched with bird or bat guano. Endemic regions include the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys in the United States, parts of Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. The fungus thrives in humid environments and is often associated with caves, old buildings, and areas undergoing construction or renovation.
