Neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) are abnormal accumulations of a protein called tau that form inside neurons. These tangles are primarily associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Tau proteins normally help to stabilize microtubules in neurons, but in NFTs, they become hyperphosphorylated and aggregate into insoluble tangles, disrupting cellular function and leading to cell death.
