Why Was Vioxx Withdrawn?

In September 2004, Merck voluntarily withdrew Vioxx from the market after studies revealed an increased risk of cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes, in patients taking the drug long-term. This decision followed data from the APPROVe (Adenomatous Polyp Prevention on Vioxx) trial, which showed that the risk of serious cardiovascular events was significantly higher in patients taking Vioxx compared to placebo.
