TIG is used in both prophylactic and therapeutic contexts. Prophylactically, it is administered to individuals who have sustained wounds that are at high risk for tetanus infection, especially if they have not been adequately vaccinated. Therapeutically, it is given to patients who are already showing symptoms of tetanus to help neutralize circulating toxins and mitigate the severity of the disease.
