In epidemiology, the hazard ratio (HR) is a measure of the effect of an exposure on an outcome of interest over time. It is commonly used in survival analysis to compare the hazard rates between two groups. The hazard rate is the rate at which events occur over time. The HR is essentially a ratio of these rates between two groups - often an exposed group and a non-exposed (control) group.
