SSIs are typically classified into three categories: superficial incisional, deep incisional, and organ/space infections. Superficial incisional infections involve only the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Deep incisional infections penetrate deeper into the fascial and muscle layers. Organ/space infections occur in any part of the body that is opened or manipulated during the surgical procedure, excluding the skin incision, fascia, or muscle layers. This classification aids in the diagnosis and management of SSIs.
