Plasmodium falciparum is one of the species of parasitic protozoans that cause malaria in humans. It is the most dangerous of the five Plasmodium species that infect humans, leading to the most severe form of the disease, known as falciparum malaria. This parasite is transmitted through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
