Naloxone is an opioid antagonist used to rapidly reverse opioid overdoses. It functions by binding to opioid receptors in the brain, thereby blocking the effects of opioids such as heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioids. This can quickly restore normal respiration to a person whose breathing has slowed or stopped as a result of overdosing.
