The NIH uses five main criteria to review R01 grant applications: - Significance: Does the study address an important problem or a critical barrier to progress in the field? - Innovation: Does the application challenge and seek to shift current research paradigms? - Approach: Are the strategies, methods, and analyses well-reasoned and appropriate? - Investigator: Are the researchers well-suited to carry out the project? - Environment: Does the scientific environment in which the work will be done contribute to the probability of success?
