Multiple pregnancies occur when a woman carries more than one fetus simultaneously. The most common forms are twins, but there can also be triplets, quadruplets, or even higher-order multiples. These pregnancies can arise from a single fertilized egg splitting (monozygotic) or from multiple eggs being fertilized (dizygotic or polyzygotic).
