CSCs are thought to arise from normal stem cells or progenitor cells that acquire mutations. These mutations endow them with properties such as self-renewal, differentiation, and resistance to conventional therapies. Unlike the bulk tumor cells, CSCs can survive chemotherapy and radiation, leading to tumor recurrence and metastasis.
