When an infected individual expels droplets, they can land on the mucous membranes of a susceptible person, such as the eyes, nose, or mouth. Alternatively, droplets can contaminate surfaces, and the virus can be transferred to the mucous membranes when a person touches these surfaces and then touches their face.
