What is West Nile Virus?

West Nile Virus (WNV) is a single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the family Flaviviridae. It primarily circulates between birds and mosquitoes, with humans and other mammals being incidental hosts. The virus was first identified in the West Nile district of Uganda in 1937 and has since spread across multiple continents, including North America, Europe, and Asia.

How is West Nile Virus Transmitted?

The primary vector for WNV is the Culex species of mosquitoes. These mosquitoes become infected when they feed on birds carrying the virus. Humans and other mammals can become infected through mosquito bites, but human-to-human transmission is extremely rare. There is currently no specific antiviral treatment for WNV. Management of the disease is supportive, focusing on alleviating symptoms. Severe cases may require hospitalization, intravenous fluids, pain relief, and respiratory support. Research into potential vaccines and antiviral therapies is ongoing.

Prevention of WNV focuses on reducing mosquito exposure and controlling mosquito populations.
