odds ratios
When Should Odds Ratios Be Used?
Odds ratios are most commonly used in
case-control studies
where the outcome is rare. They are also used in
cross-sectional studies
and in some
cohort studies
when the data is analyzed in a retrospective manner. However, they are not ideal for
cohort studies
or
randomized controlled trials
when the outcome is common, as the odds ratio can overestimate the risk.
