Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic virus that can cause severe disease in both animals and humans. First identified during an outbreak in Malaysia in 1998, the virus is named after the village in which it was discovered. Nipah virus belongs to the family Paramyxoviridae and the genus Henipavirus.
