The hazard ratio is a measure of the rate at which a particular event happens in one group compared to the rate at which it happens in another group. Specifically, it is the ratio of the hazard rates corresponding to the conditions described by two levels of an explanatory variable. A hazard rate is the rate at which an event occurs over a specified period of time.
