Gas gangrene, also known as clostridial myonecrosis, is a severe and potentially fatal infection caused by the bacteria of the genus Clostridium. The most common causative agent is Clostridium perfringens. This condition primarily affects muscle tissue and is characterized by rapid tissue destruction, systemic toxicity, and gas production within the tissues.
