Biomagnification refers to the increasing concentration of toxic substances within each successive link in the food chain. These substances are often persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and certain pesticides. These contaminants are not easily broken down by environmental processes and accumulate in organisms, leading to higher concentrations in predators at the top of the food chain.
