Biosafety is categorized into four levels, each with specific containment practices:
Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1): Basic level of protection, suitable for work with low-risk agents that pose minimal threat to humans. Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2): For work involving agents with moderate risk. It includes additional protective measures, such as the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3): High level of protection for work with agents that can cause serious or potentially lethal infections. Requires controlled access and specialized ventilation systems. Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4): The highest level of containment for work with dangerous and exotic agents that pose a high risk of aerosol-transmitted infections. It includes full-body, air-supplied suits and highly controlled environments.
