While the SIR model is useful, it has limitations. It assumes a homogeneous population where every individual has an equal chance of contacting every other individual. It also does not account for factors like heterogeneity in population density, age structure, and pre-existing immunity. More complex models, such as SEIR (which includes an Exposed compartment), address some of these limitations.
