Hypnozoites are dormant forms of the malaria parasite, Plasmodium, specifically Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale. These parasites reside in the liver cells of the human host and can reactivate weeks, months, or even years after the initial infection, leading to a recurrence of the disease without a new mosquito bite.
