Adeno-associated viruses (AAV) are small, non-enveloped viruses that belong to the Parvoviridae family. They are unique in their ability to infect human cells without causing any known disease, making them particularly interesting for gene therapy applications. AAVs require a helper virus, such as an adenovirus or herpesvirus, for replication.
