The introduction of the HPV vaccine has further reduced the incidence of cervical cancer. Vaccination programs target the primary cause of cervical cancer, HPV, and are most effective when administered before the onset of sexual activity. However, vaccinated individuals still need regular Pap smears as the vaccine does not protect against all HPV strains.
