The spores are commonly found in soil and aquatic sediments, making their way into the food chain through contaminated food and water. Improperly canned or preserved foods are particularly susceptible to contamination. When the spores find an anaerobic environment (low oxygen), they can germinate into actively growing bacteria that produce the botulinum toxin.
