The initial case, or the [index case](https://), was reported in December 2013 in a small village in Guinea. A two-year-old boy, later identified as patient zero, is believed to have contracted the virus from an infected bat. The disease quickly spread to urban areas, exacerbated by poor healthcare infrastructure and delayed response.
