The procedure for performing SPTs is relatively simple:
The skin is cleaned with alcohol. A drop of allergen extract is placed on the skin. A small, sterile lancet is used to prick the skin through the drop. After about 15-20 minutes, the skin is examined for reactions.
The size of the wheal and the presence of redness are measured and compared to a control to determine the sensitivity to the allergen.
